Rangolis are a  traditional part of Gudi Padwa celebration. Lately, modern trends of rangoli have taken form.  On the ocassion of Gudi Padwa, women use their creative thinking, to decorate the entrance of their house, with Rangoli, early in the morning. An array of dazzling designs, come out alive, meant to welcome Goddess Laxmi into the home.  The bright colurs and hues, add colour to the clebrity.

According to a legend, when the son of a priest passed away, Lord Brahma asked him to make a rangoli that looked like his son and then gave life to the it. Thus rangoli was created. Gudi Padwa dedicated to Lord Brahma, give significance to Rangoli. Goddess Lakshmi’s footsteps are also drawn at the entrance of the home. Kalash of the gudi, swastik, Ashoka tree and elephant are also drawn; also, a rising Sun, signifying new beginning.  Geometric shapes and designs, commonly the mango motif, is also drawn, as Gudi Padwa signifies beginning of spring, and seasonal fruit is mango. Rangolis are made symmetrically, signifying balance in life.  Care is taken that the outer shape of the rangoli is totally enclosed and no gaps left, for evil spirits to enter.

Modernity has given way to abstract, asymmetrical rangolis and also simplified version of the tradional ones, as women have neither skill nor time, to make complicated ones.  But, tradition is nevertheless kept alive.  Symbols like hearts and Chinese characters, have also made an entry. The older generation, though against it, in the begining, have started accepting it. Women and girls take part in rangoli competitions, held during on Gudi Padwa, which helps in showcasing their creative thinking, during competitions and exhibitions held in complexes, schools, colleges etc., thus, helping children develop their creative skills.

Versatility can be noticed, in the rangoli designs and patterns; though looking similar, differ in patterns, which is again adjudged be a professional, in the field. Variety is created with the help of coloured powders, pastes, enhanced with decorative pieces like lighted lamps, flower petals and leaves, rice grains (coloured), colourful pulses, colored sand etc
